Kaftan Pyjama Dress

I have just returned from a holiday trip to Malaysia to visit family. While in Malaysia my auntie and grandma took me to a local fabric store.  I probably didn’t need more fabric to add to my growing stash, but ended up buying 5 different fabrics with 5 future garments in mind. So look out for them on my blog!

While in Malaysia I also had the chance to try out my grandma’s antique Singer sewing machine! After Grandma showed me how to use it, I started on the first garment: kaftan pyjamas for my auntie, and completed it before flying back to Australia.

Korea fabric haul part 2: a floral dress

This is the third creation made from fabric I bought in Korea last year. You can read about the first two projects here.

This fabric is a light and flowing blended fabric which I chose with my mum in mind. The dress pattern (Simplicity K1418) I found for $1 in Ararat, Victoria when on a road trip with my friend from Melbourne to Adelaide! It comes with variations in the design of the bodice neckline, back details and sleeves. My mum chose the design with the plain back panel and short sleeves. Two-piece Dress – Graduation Outfit

I finished my dentistry course in December last year and have now been working for 3 months. The ‘adult life’ of full time work means I haven’t had as much time for sewing, so it has been a bit quiet on this blog and my instagram. Also there’s the fact that I haven’t had much inspiration of what to sew… until now.

Two-piece ball dress: up-cycled midi skirt & cropped top.

The day after my last dentistry rural placement was our Graduation Ball. I wanted to sew my own dress for the ball which meant I had to complete it weeks before (rather than days before like my last gown :P) as I wouldn’t have my sewing machine in rural SA.

I knew I wanted a two-piece outfit with a midi skirt. After looking on Pinterest for inspiration I came to the decision to sew a box pleat midi skirt and tulip open back cropped top.

I found the fabric for the skirt at my local Salvos op-shop. I think it was a table cloth or bed spread/throw? It was a heavyweight white fabric with a raised woven design of flowers and leaves. (I don’t have a ‘before’ picture of the skirt fabric as I was in a hurry to finish the outfit) The top was made from double face satin from Spotlight in an ivory/pale pink shade. Upcycled convertible ball gown

PhotoGrid_1472644856093

After watching this video by April/Coolirpa (one of my sewing and upcycling idols), where April takes two dresses from the thrift store and converts them into a new formal ball gown, I was inspired to upcycle/sew my own ball gown for my annual dental student association Grand Dental Ball.
